It's pretty dark at 5am

So for the first-ever time, I decided to give the before-work workout a shot. I actually like the idea of working out BEFORE work so that the whole day I can be happy I don't have to go to the gym after the long day of work. However, the "idea" and the "reality" are two different things. It's one thing to say "I am going to get up at 5am" when you climb into bed at night...it's another thing to actually DO that when the alarm goes off and it's still dark out and the bed is soooo warm and comfy. It's way to easy to keep smacking the SNOOZE button until around 6:15 or 6:30am, when I normally get up.

However, I really wanted to try this, and with my hair so short right now, morning showers and hair care are very "doable"at the moment, so there was no better time than the present. I figured I would try it out on a Friday, so that at least I could tell myself I can sleep in tomorrow. So I got into bed at 10pm last nite and was out by 10:30p. I actually woke up around 2:30pm with a lot of work-related stuff on my mind, so I didn't sleep too soundly between 2:30p and 5p anyway...that might have helped. I pushed myself to a sitting position right at 5am, before I had a chance to think about how I'd rather stay in bed. After that, it was pretty easy. I'd set out my workout clothes the night before so I didn't have to dig for them...a quick brush of the teeth and splash of water on the face and I was off!

Here are the great things about the pre-work workout - a full supply of parking spaces close to the gym front door...a relatively quiet gym (except for the stupid music they have blasting for the younger folk who actually like that music)...an empty locker room, no lines at the drinking fountains, and a choice of whatever machines I want. There were a handful of people there working out, and more were starting to stream in as I was leaving just before 6am.

I felt SUCH a sense of accomplishment and pride when I finished and headed out...I really doubted that I would actually do this when the alarm went off, but I did. Yay, me! I actually got to work earlier than I have all week, and feel like I have already accomplished so much in the 3 hours I've now been awake. However, I have a feeling I might not feel quite so zippy around 3pm when I hit the wall...but who cares - it's Friday, I don't have to go to the gym after work today, and I can sleep in tomorrow. And then wake up and...go to the gym again.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY A...B...C...

Its as easy as ABC to wish a very Happy Birthday to AMY (Joy), BRENDAN (Behan) and COLE (Polly). But stay off the Unicycles.

So this is how I know I have a boy....

Luke has discovered that during bath time, he can get the bottom of his big rubber duck wet, then hold the air hole against various parts of his body and squeeze the air out. He follows that by leaning forward and producing the 'real deal' until there is no more gas 'available'. From there on out, it's all rubber ducky, followed by a stream of uncontrollable laughter. Also - it should be noted that he is capable of quite a variation in the 'types' of rubber duck fart noises he can produce.

I know he's a boy because at 45 years old, I laugh almost as hard as him - and it just keeps getting funnier the more he does it.

And Then There Were None

It is official. The last of my babies is making the transition to a big boy bed. As you may be able to make out in this video, James has learned how to crawl out of his crib. Yes, he is the latest to do so, of mine, but he is also the quietest and smoothest in accomplishing the fete. The problem now comes when he wakes up in the middle of the night and wants us, he can get us. There is no more letting him cry it out unless we latch the door...hmmmm. So, after a few days of him waking up and coming to get us, we figured, "what the hell", it's time for his bed. We will leave his crib up just in case he has a bit of separation anxiety, but I don't see that. In fact, when we put his bed up, and he was standing in the crib, we asked him whose bed it was, and he pointed to himself. I said, "...but you have a crib, who will sleep here?" He pointed to himself once more, grunted and immediately climbed into his bed. I'm sure we will be cribless within the week. sniff sniff...but only for a moment. Now, if we can get him talking and out of diapers, we'll really be happening.

WE HAVE LIFTOFF!!!!!

After 5 previous delays/scrubs, two of which I drove out and back for, the space shuttle Endeavor lifted off at 6:03pm today (in honor of the Meems' birthday!). I cannot even describe how THRILLING it was to see it from the Press Mound, just 3 miles from the launch pad. The most amazing thing was the noise, how unbelievably LOUD it was...you just felt it in your chest and it made me want to cry from the awesomeness of it. I had the video going but was wasn't watching it thru that, as I wanted to keep my eyes directly on the shuttle itself. And once the tremendous noise was over, it was unbelievably quiet. And I immediately wanted to yell out "DO IT AGAIN! DO IT AGAIN!!!!"

And a special treat was that Brendan just happened to get this one day off from his 2 week shoot, so he got to be out there with me and Brilly to see it. It made me so happy that all 3 of us could experience it together as we had originally planned.

Godspeed, Endeavour!!!!

A TRUE DAY OF REJOICING!!!!!!!

Yes, it is a definite day to rejoice and give THANKS because this is the day the Meems came into the world, and what a MUCH MUCH better place it is for that! Happiest of Days to you, our beloved Meems! I hope your day is just wonderful from start to finish. Thank you for making our family such a special and happy place to be!

I am going to shoot up a space shuttle tonight in your honor!!!! (the power of positive thinking?)

Our Second Attempt - Scrubbed Again!

Yes, another trip out to the cape, another disappointment. Weather once again kept the shuttle from escaping the bonds of Earth. They are taking today off (thank goodness, 'cause we could sure use the break from driving out there and back) and will try again tomorrow; there is a 60% chance of favorable conditions tomorrow. We did manage to amuse ourselves in and around the NASA briefing room yesterday anyway, as you can see from the photos. More as it happens.

I Can Do Anything, You Can Do!!

Not far behind...actually less then 8 hours...the sprite gets it. Bound and determined, her sister is not going to do something that she can't.

She must have worked on it for 3 hours today. Kid has drive and ambition. Now if she stops riding tomorrow, she can be just like her dad. Been there, done that ;>

Thanks you've been great!!

Ride On!!

Well it finally happened. After trials and tribulations, bruises and scrapes as well as some shaming from her little sister; Natalie has learned to ride her big girl bike. Two wheels and no trainers. Here is a clip of the event.

We are all very proud of Natalie and I predict that Cole will be riding her big girl bike by her birthday.

That's all I have time for...You've been great!!

No-Go for Launch...DRAT!

Well, after the launch was scrubbed on Saturday, it was looking very favorable for Sunday, so Brilly and I finally made the drive out to the Cape to hopefully see it go up from the Press Mound. First there was the adventure of getting on property and getting our Media Credentials...we were stopped at the first checkpoint and of course got Mr. Overzealous Security Guard, who asked to see proof of what media outlet we worked for. So I showed him my Golf Channel badge, to which he replied "what does the Golf Channel have to do with a shuttle launch?" To which I replied "uh, ever heard of Alan Shepherd hitting a golf ball on the moon?" (and added the word "IDIOT!" in my mind). He was laughing but still looking skeptical, and I got a little nervous. But I was also a little irritated because who was he to question WHY we got credentials...he wasn't in charge of handing them out and the bottom line was that we HAD credentials...we just had to go pick them up. I was just wondering if I'd have to take off my hat and play the Cancer Card when he finally waved us on. Phew! Checkpoint One - passed. Every security person we encountered after him was MUCH nicer and easier. We were directed to the Badging Office, took a wrong turn, went back and finally found it. (There are few things that irritate me more than Bad Signage, and NASA might possibly take the prize for Worst Signage Ever...those astronauts are lucky they get driven out to the launch pad by someone else, as they'd probably get lost if they tried to get out there themselves).
So we go into the Badging Office, give them out information...and are told nothing is coming up in the system. Ruh-Roh. But the woman quickly realized that we were in the wrong office...there is a separate office for MEDIA credentials. So she gave us a map and we got back into the car and drove a circuitous route to a very shabby, nondescript, one-story building that was just a step up from a trailer. Ah, yes...that seemed about right for media. Went in there and met the two nicest people we'd met that whole day. They were helpful and funny and gave us our media badges without any problems. (BTW, the guy who got us the credentials works for NBC, which is why our badges say "NBC News").

However, we weren't at the Press Mound yet, and I was still nervous that someone would stop us, see at once we didn't belong there, and boot our butts off of NASA property. Armed with an outdated (as we discovered) map from the Media Badging Office, we set out to get to the Press Mound. It seemed simple... However, the Kings of Bad Signage didn't have any signs that said "Press Mound This Way" and half of their streets had no street signs, so we ended up guessing where to turn...I still had fears of taking a wrong turn, coming face-to-face with the shuttle launch pad and having to screech away as guards with big guns came chasing after us.

We guessed right, but still ended up at the checkpoint to the launch pad and having to ask the nice men (with machine guns) where the heck we were supposed to park. They were very nice and kindly showed us the way. AT LAST - we found the Press Parking Lot and then the NBC Compound, where our media contact (nicknamed Dan-Dan The Spaceman by Brilly) met us, gave us a tour of the grounds, the media briefing room, the media center, and, most importantly, where the bathrooms were. Then we were pretty much on our own, so we wandered around, took some great, fun pictures, and just soaked in the coolness of being there. One of the neatest things was the giant countdown clock...we have seen it millions of times, especially on the NASA channel, and when we have seen random people walking by it or standing by it, we have wondered "who is that person and why is he just standing there?" Well, the answer is that "that person" was someone with access to the Press Mound, becuz the clock is right there on the grass across the water from the launch pad, and now WE were "that person" as we could walk right up to the clock if we wanted. SO cool to be right there!
Unfortunately, the day did not have a happy ending, as weather moved in very close to launch time, and would have interfered with the "return to launch pad" window, so it was officially scrubbed about 10 minutes before it would have launched (even though we knew for about an hour this was probably going to happen). We were bummed, but we are planning on going back out tonight if it goes (right now, not looking favorable because of weather)...having been out there now and been SO close to seeing it, we now want to see it through, even if it means more driving back and forth. It's only about 60 miles out there, so in regular traffic takes maybe an hour. Coming back in the dreaded "shuttle watchers' traffic" wasn't as bad as we had feared...there were some slowdowns at merge points but we never really came to a standstill and much of it was regular speed driving, so we made it back in about an hour 40 mins.
I will keep you posted as conditions warrant. Fingers crossed that we get to see this sucker lift off from our privileged perch on the Press Mound!!

SMACZNIE!

Meems and I met Uncle Stan and Phoof at the new location for the Polish festival. Used to be a Freedom Hill, but Macomb County closed it down to all festivals to save money. So now it was appropriately on the grounds of the Polish Century Club in Sterling Heights. Not bad... nice Polish band playing and we did sample the local quisine... golomki, kielbasa, kapusta, city chicken and pierogis, with some mashed potatoes thrown as a glue to hold it all together. Then we topped it off with a nice cold brew. We gave it a couple of hours, then split.

Say No More

Yes, It's not a beer commercial, but doesn't this picture say it all? Relax at the cottage. And yes, Terry, I COULD have gotten further away.
